These scams range from inflated final bills after the truck has been loaded, to holding goods hostage until extra payments are made, to simply vanishing with a customer's belongings. In an industry that is still largely unorganized, knowing how to protect yourself is absolutely essential.

1. The Classic Bait-and-Switch Pricing Scam

The most common scam is attracting customers with an unrealistically low quotation. Once your goods are loaded onto the truck and in transit, the company presents a dramatically inflated final invoice, citing vague charges for 'extra packing material', 'loading charges', or 'fuel surcharges'. Since your belongings are already on the truck, you are left with no choice but to pay.

Red Flag: Any moving company that gives you a firm quote without doing an in-person or video survey of your home is likely to inflate the bill later. Always insist on a pre-move survey.

2. Key Verification Checks Before Hiring

Before signing any contract with a packers and movers company, always perform these essential verification checks:

• Check GST Registration: Every legitimate moving business should have a valid GSTIN. Verify it on the official GST portal.
• Verify Physical Address: Visit the office or warehouse in person. A company with only a mobile number and no fixed address is a serious red flag.

• Confirm Transit Insurance: A credible company will always offer transit insurance and provide a proper policy certificate.

3. The 'Hostage Goods' Situation and How to Avoid It

In this scam, movers load your goods and then refuse to unload them at the destination until you pay an amount far higher than the original quote. The best way to protect yourself is to never pay more than 20-30% of the total quoted amount as an advance. Always keep the final payment for after successful delivery and inspection of your goods.
